in Tijuana: An interview with La Linea and Bulbo Press from

Can you tell us a little bit about your zine and group? / Platícanos un poco sobre tu zine y tu grupo. La Línea: The interdisciplinary work of La Linea is comprised of a combination of women that live and work in the city of Tijuana-Mexico and two that live and work in San Diego, CA. We are interdisciplinary in that each one of us comes from a different profession or line of study: philosophy, literature and visual arts. All of us also write and have given lectures of our work in both cities of the border as well as done performance and installation. In this way we shape an independent group. We began this project after seeing the necessity, urgent- in our city and in our country, of creating a space in which to promote the work of young women that are somehow involved, in a preliminary professional level, with art and literature. Línea: El Interdisciplinario La Línea está conformado
por mujeres que viven y trabajan en la ciudad de Tijuana-México y dos de
las integrantes que viven y trabajan en San Diego, CA. Somos un interdisciplinario
pues cada una realiza una profesión distinta: Filosofía, literatura
y artes visuales. Todas también Empezamos este proyecto al ver la necesidad -urgente- en nuestra ciudad y en nuestro país de crear un espacio para promover el trabajo de las mujeres jóvenes que están vinculadas de manera profesional (en una primera etapa) con el arte y la literatura. Bulbo Press: Bulbo Press is a part of a public art project that includes TV, radio, a record label, a website and the magazine. The magazine, like all the other facets of Bulbo promote cultural activities of the Tijuana-San Diego border as part of a vibrant and changing social weaving. Bulbo Press is a quarterly magazine. During various years each one of the staff put out fanzines so putting out Bulbo seemed like the next natural step in an effort to professionalize what we did without setting aside the passion and spontaneity. Bulbo Press: Bulbo Press es parte de un proyecto de arte público en medios que incluye televisión, radio, un sello discográfico, una página de Internet y la revista. La revista como todas las otras facetas de Bulbo promueve actividades culturales de la frontera de Tijuana-San Diego como parte de un tejido social vivo y cambiante. Bulbo Press es una revista bimestral. Durante varios años cada uno de los que trabajan en la revista hacíamos fanzines por lo que iniciar esta odisea editorial de Bulbo Press nos pareció el siguiente paso natural en un esfuerzo por profesionalizar lo que hacemos sin dejar de lado la pasión y la espontaneidad.

How did you come up with the idea and the name? / ¿De dónde salió el nombre y la idea? La Línea: The name and the idea were given by the place we inhabit: The Border (literally The Line). The border between the 1st and 3rd world. The first door (or last depending on how you see it) into Latin America. La Línea: El nombre y la idea la dio el mismo lugar que habitamos: La Línea. La frontera entre el 1er y 3er mundo. La primera puerta (o última de acuerdo como se vea) hacia América Latina. Bulbo Press: In its time, the technology of the lightbulb (bulbo) in electronics revolutionized the speed of communication in the lives of people. We liked it because of that and because it symbolizes ideas and creativity. Bulbo Press: En su tiempo, la tecnología del bulbo en la electrónica revolucionó el ritmo y la velocidad de las comunicaciones en la vida de las personas. Nos gustó por eso y también porque simboliza las ideas y la creatividad. |

How does the process of making the zine look like? / ¿Qué es tu proceso en hacer tu zine? La Línea: Each one of us has a function in the realization of the publication La Linea. There is editing coordination and design that Amanda Caballero Parado covers, visual coordination that Abril Castro covers, and performance coordination that Margarita Valencia Triana covers. We create a communication/work network through electronic mediums, the material is received, editorial and curatorial advice is sent, and design, editing and printing is done. La Línea: Cada una de nosotras tenemos una función para poder realizar la publicación La Línea. Existen funciones de coordinación editorial y diseño que cubre Amaranta Caballero Prado, coordinadora de visuales que cubre Abril Castro y coordinadora en performance que realize Margarita Valencia Triana. Se realiza una convocatoriapor medios electrónicos, se recibe el material, se envía a los consejos tanto editorial como al curatorial y se lleva a cabo el proceso de diseño, edición e imprenta. Bulbo Press: We have created various departments (editorial, distribution, sales, marketing) and we meet weekly trying to come up with a plan in order to stay on schedule and so that the product meets our satisfaction. There still much to do but without organization we could not have arrived at 8 issues. Bulbo Press: Hemos creado varios departamentos (editorial, distribución, ventas, marketing) y nos reunimos semanalmente tratando de apegarnos a un plan para estar en tiempo y que el producto sea de nuestra satisfacción. Aún hay mucho por hacer pero sin organización no podríamos haber llegado a 8 números. Do you accept submissions? / ¿Aceptas contribuciones? La Línea: Our publication is created primarily through the contributions- text or images- of other women because it is one of the fundamental objectives of this project. Promotion. La Línea: Nuestra publicación se realiza primordialmente con las colaboraciones -en texto e imagen- de otras mujeres puesto que es uno de los objetivos fundamentales de este proyecto. Promover. For each issue we select a principal theme and then depending on that theme we ask for contributions of people involved in that arena and whose writing we like. Bulbo Press: El contenido de cada número lo planeamos con meses de anticipación. Para cada número elegimos un tema principal y ya dependiendo de tema pedimos las colaboraciones a gente que esté involucrada en esa área y nos guste como escriba. Who is part of the group and what else do you do? / ¿Quién más es parte de tu grupo y qué más hacen aparte del zine? La Línea: We have done performance and installation with groups in San Diego, CA and we have also done lectures and presentations of books in Tijuana. La Línea: Hemos realizado performance e instalación con grupos de San Diego, CA y hemos realizado también lecturas y presentaciones de libros en Tijuana. Bulbo Press: We are sixteen at Bulbo, 8 men and 8 women. We are all involved in different realms of Bulbo and we have a responsibility in something specific. Besides Bulbo we have a video producer by the name of Galatea audio/visual. Bulbo Press: Somos 16 los integrantes de Bulbo, 8 hombres y 8 mujeres. Todos estamos involucrados en las distintas ramas de Bulbo y tenemos una responsabilidad en algo específico. Además de Bulbo tenemos una productora de video llamada Galatea audio/visual. | |
Where do you distribute your zine in Tijuana and San Diego? / ¿Dónde distribuyen su zine en Tijuana o San Diego? La Línea: In both places. Besides that, we mail it to other cities in Mexico and other countries. We distribute independently. La Línea: En las dos partes. Además enviamos a otras ciudades de México y a otros países. La distribución la realizamosde manera independiente. Bulbo Press: The magazine is distributed in Tijuana in record stores, rock accessory stores, stationary stores, cafes, high schools, universities and events. In San Diego, you can get it at Off the Record, Bluestocking Books and at Hot Monkey Love Cafe. It is also sold in Rosarito, Mexicali, Guadalara and Mexico City. Bulbo Press: La revista se distribuye en Tijuana en tiendas de discos, tiendas de accesorios de rock, papelerías, cafés, en preparatorias, universidades, en eventos, etc. Y en San Diego se consigue en Off the Record, Bluestocking Books y en Hot Monkey Love Café. How would you describe the zine scene in Tijuana and Mexico in general? / ¿Nos dices un poco sobre el "zine scène" en Tijuana y México en general? La Línea: Fanzines have a history that comes generally from the publications that high school or university students create, but the independent fanzines of the Mexican underground are primarily made in the Distrito Federal (Mexico City). Some of them have become strong as magazines with national distribution but it is rare that such a project should last that long. We made La Linea with the intention that it become defunct as is a characteristic of a fanzine but so that while it is made, the work and quality is of a more professional level. La
Línea: Los fanzines tienen una historia
que deriva generalmente hacia las publicaciones que realizan estudiantes en las
preparatorias o Universidades, pero principalmente los fanzines independientes
del underground mexicano se realizan en el Distrito Federal. Algunos de ellos
han llegado a ser proyectos Bulbo Press: I know very few zines. Generally, they are made by high school students and are distributed in those same circles. The life is also very unpredictable. In the 90's there were many fanzines, at least in Tijuana, but the creators grow up and they leave them behind. Then there is a void until the next generation starts to make things. Bulbo Press: Son pocos los zines que conozco. Por lo general los hacen muchachos de preparatoria y se distribuyen entre sus mismos círculos de conocidos. Tienen también una vida muy efímera. En los 90 hubo muchos fanzines al menos en Tijuana pero luego crecen los que los realizan y lo dejan, luego viene un vacío hasta que llega otra generación y empieza a hacer cosas. What are some good zines in Tijuana (or/and Mexico) and how can we find them? / ¿Cuáles son unos zines buenos en Tijuana (o/y México) y cómo los podemos encontrar? La Línea: In Tijuana, the group Pressless is one that has been creating and distributing fanzines for the longest time. You can get it from the people that make it. Bulbo Press is another group that within their diverse activities, create this mode of communication. Although they have quite a production in Mexico City they are still generally not well-known. La Línea: En Tijuana el grupo de Presless es uno de los que ha tenido más tiempo creando y distribuyendo fanzines. Lo encuentran directamente con sus realizadores. Bulbo Press es otro de los grupos que dentro de sus diversas actividades realizan también este medio de difusión. En la ciudad de México hay todavía una gran producción de ellos pero generalmente son desconocidos. Bulbo Press: I know of one named Zurdo that they make at the high school Lazaro Cardenas and another whose name I can't remember made by youth of Cobach. I don't remember seeing more than 5 in the past few months. It used to be easier to get them in spurts but it's been a while since I found one. Bulbo Press: Sé de uno llamado Zurdo que hacen en la prepa Lázaro Cárdenas y otro del que ahorita no recuerdo el nombre hecho por jóvenes del Cobach. No recuerdo haber visto más de 5 en los últimos meses. Antes era más fácil conseguirlos en tocadas pero hace mucho no encuentro uno. What are your visions for the future? ¿Cuáles son tus visiones o deseos para el futuro? La
Línea: That independent publications risk more so that they can shape
a good sample representation of realistic culture. I would like La Linea to be
strengthened by the support of women that work in our surroundings. Bulbo Press: My vision of Bulbo Press: see it grow as an editorial project with international reach, that in each issue it leaves something in the hearts of its readers, that it promotes the work of creative people of all kinds; rap artists, designers, skaters, etc. and that it serves as a starting point for more young people to organize and create something that enriches their lives. Bulbo Press: Mi visión de Bulbo Press: verlo crecer como proyecto editorial con proyección internacional, que en cada número deje algo en los corazones de sus lectores, que promueva el trabajo de realizadores de todo tipo: raperos, diseñadores, patinadores, etc. y que sirva de punta de lanza para que más gente se aventure a organizarse y a crear algo que enriquezca su vida.
