The Antifee Festival at the University of Göttingen, which was held for the first time this year, invited Grrrlzines.net to conduct a hands-on workshop. The main focus of the two-day festival, which consisted of numerous live performances, concerts, poetry slams and workshops, was the development and reflection of antisexist and antinationalist strategies.
During the workshop, Sonja gave a short overview of the history and relevance of fanzines and provided an insight into the evolution of the grrrl zine scene in the US and worldwide. Different grrrl zines were passed around to give participants an impression of the broad variety of themes and approaches that exist in grrrl zine culture. After the technicalities of producing a zine had been established, the participants started to brainstorm and then armed themselves with paper, scissors, gluesticks and typewriters to get to work on their own collaborative grrrl zine. After three hours, a 16-page grrrl zine had been produced which was then xeroxed and distributed to all participants. Subjects matters included, amongst others, a reflection of the working conditions of sex workers, reviews of a female Bosnian author and an Israeli all female band, a critique of everyday sexism as well as a collage on the wage gap between men and women.
Here are some images of the zine that was created during the workshop:
