Since the 1970s, there have been various forms of feminist self-organisation because the student movement of the 1960s tended to neglect the question of gender equality. It was in the 70s that feminist magazines were founded, women’s music festivals were held for the first time and art exhibitions of feminist art were organized. The exhibition “DIY - Women doing it for themselves! Feminist strategies in cultural self-organisation” aimed to show the ongoing continuity of these endeavors and focussed on the political dimension of feminist DIY culture.
An important part of the exhibition was the media room with the international zine exhibit which focussed largely on Austrian / German language grrrl zines. Visitors could sit down on pallets, pick grrrlzines from a clothesline and take their time reading them or leafing through them. On a monitor, a variety of documentaries could be watched on DVD. One of them was Kara Herold's film "Grrly Show" about American grrrl zine producers. Visitors also had the chance to pick up one of the "Zine Kits", which were specially designed by Austrian grrrl zine makers Cuntstunt, to produce their own zine at home.
